FAQs
(frequently asked questions) such as where the boats will be, times of
events, where to watch the race, etc.
Important
Information
includes driving directions, media
info, events, hospitality,
boating, docking policy,
city information, and education
information.
There
are essentially 4 venues for the Chesapeake stopover of the Race:
Baltimore:
The finish of Leg 6 of the Volvo Ocean Race will take place at Ft. McHenry
(same as the 1997-98 race). The 4th annual Baltimore Waterfront Festival
will be held throughout the Inner Harbor in conjunction with the Race
and is where the boats will be docked until they move to Annapolis. The
Festival was inaugurated during the 1998 Race and attracted 400,000 people
in 1998 and continues to be attended by 300,000 each year.
Annapolis:
The sailing capital of the United States, Annapolis will welcome the Race
fleet at City Dock adjacent to the U.S. Naval Academy prior to the start
of Leg 7. 60,000 people visited the 1998 Race Village in Annapolis.
Sandy
Point: A State Park operated by the Maryland Department of Natural
Resources, Sandy Point will be the site of a two day festival celebrating
the Race, particularly the Restart. The one-day 1998 event attracted 30,000
people. The Park is at the foot of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge with a view
of the starting area.
Chesapeake
Bay Bridge:
The Restart of the Race will
take place 1 nautical mile north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (same as
the 1997-98 Race). The spectator fleet in 1998 was 6,000 boats. The Annual
Bay Bridge walk, in which 50,000 walkers participate, will coincide with
the Restart. (safety

Frequently
Asked Questions
1.
Where is the best place to view the finish? (see
finish safety map - .pdf file)
a. Keep in mind that the finish time and day is weather dependant. It
could very well occur at night. If it is a daytime finish and you are
not on the water, Ft. McHenry National Monument is the best option for
viewing. After each boat finishes, it will motor into the Inner Harbor
to the arrival pontoon at the end of the Constellation Pier for a short
ceremony.
b. If you plan to view the finish from the water, please consult boating
information further down in this document.
2.
When will the boats finish?
a. This is highly unpredicatable and weather dependant. The boats will
leave Miami on April 14. Depending on wind strength and direction, we
expect them to arrive in Baltimore on Wednesday at the earliest and Thursday
at the latest. Check our website for updates as the fleet progresses up
the coast. Please come down to the Inner Harbor for the arrival ceremony
at any time/ day or night.
3.
Where will the boats be in Baltimore? Annapolis?
a. Baltimore - the boats will be docked on docks in front of the Maryland
Science Center in the Inner Harbor.
b. Annapolis - the boats will be docked on docks at the end of City Dock.
4.
Will the public have access to the docks?
a. In both Baltimore and Annapolis the plan at the moment is to open the
docks to tours for limited hours.
5.

Where should we park in Baltimore? Annapolis? Sandy Point?
a. Baltimore - all major hotels have parking garages in the Inner Harbor
b. Annapolis - Suggested
parking is available at the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium at Rowe Boulevard,
just off Route 50 at Exit 24. Park your car, then board the shuttle service
and head to City Dock. Drop by the Visitors Center at 26 West Street to
gather more information, or use nearby public parking facilities: the
Whitmore Garage, Gotts Court Garage (adjacent the Visitors Center)
or state parking lots B and C just off Rowe Blvd. (See www.visit-annapolis.org for a map of the Annapolis Historic District.) Visitors
can tune to Radio 1620 AM to hear the most updated information regarding
transportation and parking. Parking and shuttle service for the Bay Bridge
Walk on Sunday, April 28, 2002 operates separately from other weekend
activities.
c.
Sandy Point State Park - Parking will be available on Saturday ONLY at
the State Park. On Sunday, free busses will be available from the satellite
lot at Parole Shopping Center (Aris T. Allen Blvd. to Riva Road). Follow

11.
Where is the best place to view the Parade of Sail?
a. The Parade of Sail will start in
Baltimore's Inner Harbor at 12:00. The boats will keep a leisurely pace
from Baltimore to Annapolis, arriving in time for the 5:00 Welcome Reception
at the City Dock in Annapolis.
b. If you
are planning to view the Parade of Sail from the land, Baltimore's
Inner Harbor at noon and Annapolis City Docks at 5:00 are clearly your
best
options. Optional viewing locations would be the Ft. McHenry National
Monument (between 12:30 - 1:30) or Tide Point - 1040 Hull Street Baltimore,
MD - http://www.tide-point.com.
We will not be able to designate a specific time of passage for the fleet
from Ft. McHenry to Annapolis because the boats will be sailing independently
and the wind direction and strength will be a factor that we have no control
over.

Boating
Information
PLEASE NOTE - For all three events - the Finish (see finish
safety map - .pdf file) , Parade
of Sail and Re-Start (safety
information for restart - .pdf file) -
spectator boats will not allowed closer than 200 feet to the race boats.
Spectator boats are also required to be prudent and use good judgement
concerning speed, ensuring that your wake does not create an unsafe situation
for other spectator boats in the area. There will be a significant law
enforcement presence, including the US Coast Guard, for all three events.
For the Re-Start, several designated spectator viewing areas will be available.
An 7-mile long exclusion zone (1/2 mile wide) from North of the Bay Bridge
to Thomas Point will be established as it was in 1998 to ensure the safety
of the Volvo Ocean yachts during the early stage of this leg. Spectator
craft will not be allowed in this exclusion area.
